TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – After an 85-40 rout of Hanover on Wednesday night, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team has their sights set for another Heartland Conference showdown with the Bluffton Beavers on Saturday January 28.
Rose-Hulman and Bluffton have been atop the HCAC standings for the entire season. RHIT is in sole possession of first-place in the Heartland Conference with a league mark of 10-1. The Fightin' Engineers are currently 15-3 overall and the women have won five straight games. Bluffton is in second-place in the HCAC at 9-2. The Beavers are also 15-3 in 2016-17.
In the first matchup this season between the two Heartland powers, Rose-Hulman defeated then-ranked No. 19 Bluffton by a final score of 55-46 in Terre Haute back on December 10. In the win, the Fightin' Engineers held the Beavers to 30% (15-50) shooting from the floor and only 22.2% (2-9) shooting from three-point range. RHIT also outrebounded Bluffton 34-27. Sophomore Ally Bromenschenkel led Rose-Hulman with a double-double, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the game.
The series between both institutions is tight but Bluffton holds a narrow 12-10 advantage in the all-time series.
Bromenschenkel has lead RHIT in scoring (12.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg) the entire season. Her sister, Abby Bromenschenkel, has started every contest at the point and is averaging 7.4 ppg and 3.0 rpg. Junior Alyzia Dilworth and senior Abbie Marshall continue to lead a strong Rose-Hulman defense that is leading the HCAC in scoring defense (allowing only 48.7 ppg) and rebounding margin (+9.8 rpg). Dilworth is second on the squad in scoring, averaging 8.1 ppg. Marshall is averaging 6.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg, and leads RHIT with 2.8 assists per game. Marshall has had two games in the month of January where she has recorded performances of eight and nine assists.
Bluffton is led by three veteran players. Junior Macey Sheerer leads BU and ranks No. 2 in the HCAC in scoring with 15.4 ppg. The 5'6" guard is also averaging 6.6 rpg and 2.8 apg. Senior center Rachel Beining is averaging 13.3 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Junior guard Kaycee Rowe is also scoring in double figures, averaging 12.5 ppg. Rowe is also averaging 5.8 rpg.
