Rose-Hulman Advances to HCAC Title Game After Penalty Shootout Thriller

VIDEO: WATCH TURNER PERKINS ADVANCE RHIT ON A PENALTY KICK

HANOVER, Ind. -- The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinal between Rose-Hulman and Hanover was filled with all the drama that accompanies postseason action.  The Fightin' Engineers advanced to the team's fifth straight HCAC Title game after defeating Hanover College 4-3 on penalty kicks, following a 1-1 draw.

With the victory, third-seeded Rose-Hulman (12-4-3) advances to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Championship Game at top-seeded Transylvania (16-1) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Rose-Hulman controlled the pace of play early, out shooting the Panthers 9-2 in the first half.  Senior Austin Webb's corner kick in the 31st minute was deflected just outside the box and found the foot of fellow senior Turner Perkins who fired the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.  Rose-Hulman led 1-0 at the intermission.

Hanover, the No. 2 seed in the HCAC Tournament, found their footing in the second half, out shooting Rose 10-1.  With just 44 seconds left in the game Renato Yostsui's corner kick was headed into the back of the net by Dominic Isadore, equalizing the game at 1-1.  The match would head into overtime.

With chilling temperatures and heavy rain setting in, both teams combined for five shots in each of the two overtime periods.

Dominic Isadore started off the penalty kick shootout for Hanover by connecting on then team's first attempt.  Senior Davis Ferriell stepped up for Rose-Hulman and drove his penalty kick past the Hanover goalie Will Bedel.

Senior goalie Carter Wright made a diving save on Hanover's second PK attempt, punching Thomas Doering's shot to the right of the goal.  Austin Webb gave Rose-Hulman a 2-1 advantage after he sent his penalty shot into the back of the net.

Renato Yostsui kept Hanover very much alive in the shootout after he converted his penalty kick attempt.  Freshman Ethan Butler put Rose back up 3-2 after making his penalty kick.

In the fourth round of the shootout, Nicholas Ash made his penalty shot attempt.  With a chance to seal the win for Rose-Hulman, a Michael Simmons penalty kick clanged off of the right post.

The fifth round of the PK shootout provided even more drama as Carter Wright made another diving save, this time on Michael Dumaine's shot.  Turner Perkins stepped up for Rose-Hulman and converted the game clinching penalty kick propelling the Fightin' Engineers to the HCAC Title game.
