Men's Basketball Opens Season in Chicago Midway Classic This Weekend

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's basketball team will kick off the 2017-18 season on Friday November 17 against Trinity University (Texas) in the opening game of the University of Chicago Tip Off Tournament.  Rose-Hulman will play a second game against the host Chicago Maroons on Saturday November 18.

Tip off against Trinity on Friday is set for 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. Eastern Time).  The Chicago matchup is at 3 p.m. CT (4 p.m. ET).

Rose-Hulman (0-0) News & Notes:

  • Rose-Hulman finished 14-12 last season, including 12-6 in league play to qualify for the HCAC Tournament.
  • The Fightin' Engineers return four starters and six of their top seven scorers from last year's team, led by junior second-team all-conference selection Charlie Aimone at 16.2 points per game
  • Other top returning scorers include sophomore John Czarnecki (8.3 ppg); sophomore Ryuji Aoki (7.9 ppg); senior Stephen Schueth (7.6 ppg); junior Nick McGrail (7.0 ppg); and junior Luke Callahan (6.3 ppg).
  • Head Coach Rusty Loyd enters his fourth year at Rose-Hulman.  Loyd's career record is 46-34, including 35-19 in HCAC regular season games.
  • Coach Loyd returns to his alma mater this weekend, where he is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame.
  • Rose-Hulman has reached the championship game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament four times in the past six seasons. 

Friday's Opponent: Trinity University (Texas) (0-1)

  • Trinity finished 12-14 last season, including 7-7 in league play to qualify for the SCAC Tournament.
  • Trinity returns its top three scorers from a year ago in Danny Rivara (13.5 ppg), Matt Jones (11.7 ppg) and Jayden Holden (10.9 ppg).
  • Texas-Dallas defeated Trinity 63-51 in its 2017-18 opener on Wednesday night.  Jones led the Tigers with nine points.

Saturday's Opponent: Chicago Maroons (0-0)

  • Chicago finished 16-9 last season, including 8-6 in the UAA standings.
  • The Maroons won defeated No. 4 Rochester and No. 5 Washington (Mo.) during a 4-1 run to end the 2016-17 season.
  • Returning double-figure scorers for Chicago include Noah Karras (13.1 ppg) and Jake Fenlon (12.0 ppg).
