TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology raced past crosstown rival Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College by a final score of 98-54 on Wednesday night in the Dorsett Automotive Crosstown Classic. It was the home opener for the Fightin' Engineers and both fan bases filed into Hulbert Arena. For Rose, it was their sixth straight win over their crosstown rival. Wednesday night's win was also the 26th straight home victory for the Fightin' Engineers, the longest active Division III women's basketball streak in the nation.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a quick 27-12 advantage after the first quarter of play as the Fightin' Engineers shot 52% (13-25) in the opening period. Ally Bromenschenkel scored eight of her 16 points in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Rose-Hulman beat SMWC up and down the floor the entire game, scoring 28 points in transition. The Fightin' Engineers cruised to a 54-25 lead at halftime after outscoring the Pomeroys 27-13 in the second quarter.
The Fightin' Engineers again poured 27 points in the third quarter, this time on the strength 76.5% (13-17) shooting from the floor. Abby Bromenschenkel scored seven of her nine points in the third frame.
Rose-Hulman came close to eclipsing the 100-point mark but the Fightin' Engineers were held at 98. Stacy Fox highlighted the fourth quarter with a three-pointer from the left wing on a nice pass from Hannah Woody For the game, the Fightin' Engineers shot 55.6% (45-81) and came down with 59 total rebounds. The Fightin' Engineers assisted on 34 of the 45 made field goals. Those 34 assists shattered the previous school record of 28 assists set against SMWC back in 2015. Senior Lindsey Fagerberg led RHIT with a career-high 17 points on 8-14 shooting. She added four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Ally Bromenschenkel recorded another double-double with 16 points, on 8-10 shooting, and 10 rebounds. Debie Gedeon contributed 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench. She was a perfect 5-5 from the floor. Chiarra Franklin reached double figures with 10 points while adding seven rebounds. Senior Alyzia Dilworth made an impact defensively, tying the school record with seven steals. She added six boards.
Rose-Hulman improved to 3-3 on the year while Saint Mary-of-the-Woods fell to 2-3. Rose will be back in action on Saturday December 2 against Defiance College as Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play begins. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.
