Women's Basketball Captures HCAC Opener Over Defiance

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology placed three players in double figures to win its NCAA Division III leading 27th consecutive home game at Hulbert Arena, topping Defiance College 67-55 in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Ally Bromenschenkel led the balanced scoring attack with 16 points and seven rebounds.  Senior Alyzia Dilworth pitched in with 13 points and a team-high four steals, and junior Chiarra Franklin came off the bench with 10 points and six rebounds.

Other key contributors to the Fightin' Engineer offense included Abby Bromenschenkel with nine points and six assists; sophomore Hannah Woody with five points; junior Kayla Gerken with four points and five rebounds; and junior Debie Gedeon with four points, three rebounds and two steals.

Defiance remained within contention throughout the contest, led by a 15-point performance from Whitney Schalk.  Rose-Hulman led 25-22 at halftime and 47-44 after three quarters as the Yellow Jackets relied on five three-pointers and 14 free throws to remain close.

The score stood at 53-48 for much of the early fourth quarter, before a three-pointer by Dilworth and a basket from Abby Bromenschenkel increased the Fightin' Engineer lead to double figures and secured the win.

Rose-Hulman improved to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in HCAC play, while Defiance dropped to 1-4 and 0-1 in league play.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action at Mount St. Joseph University on Wednesday night.
