TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rallied from a five-run deficit to force extra innings before narrowly falling 10-9 in 11 innings to Greenville College in the 2017 baseball home opener at Art Nehf Field on Wednesday night.
Rose-Hulman scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to knot the score at 9-9 and force extra frames. Greenville relied on a Shane Olmsted RBI single in the 11th inning to earn the victory.
Offensively, Drew Schnitz and Conner Shipley led the Fightin' Engineers with two hits each. Schnitz scored two runs and had a pair of singles with two walks. Shipley also had two singles, one run scored and one walk.
David Burnside scored two runs on the evening for Rose-Hulman, while Koby Close and Zach Trusk recorded one hit, one RBI and one run scored.
Jesse Getz the 13-hit Greenville attack with four hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Austin Marsh of Greenville and Clayton Mayfield of Rose-Hulman entered a relief pitchers dual in the late innings before Marsh picked up the win with 3.2 scoreless innings. Ian Grant tossed two scoreless innings and Mayfield allowed just one run in three innings for the Fightin' Engineers.
Greenville improved to 3-5 with the victory, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 1-6. The Fightin' Engineers will host Carthage College in a three-game series this weekend, weather permitting, at Art Nehf Field.
