Softball Falls Narrowly Twinbill to Illinois College

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Illinois College relied on a pair of late rallies to claim a 4-3 and 3-1 softball doubleheader sweep over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday night.

In the opener, Illinois College scored once in the seventh to force extra innings and won 4-3 in eight frames.  Shelby Koehler led the winners with two doubles and two runs scored, including a double to start the seventh inning rally.  Mariah Hedges tossed the complete game to pick up the win for the Lady Blues.

Three Rose-Hulman players had multiple hits in the opener.  Jessica Will had a single, double and one RBI; Michelle Korf recorded two singles, one run and one RBI; and Jessica Thuer contributed two singles.

Korf tossed the complete game in the pitching circle, scattering 10 hits with two strikeouts.  Ellissa Eckert added a single and one RBI, and Janel Lake pitched in with a single and scored once for the Engineers.

In the nightcap, Illinois College scored twice in the seventh and final inning to capture a 3-1 victory.  Jackie Reilly and Frankie Sikora led the Lady Blues with two hits each.

The Rose-Hulman offense featured singles by Morgan Dreyer, Cassidy Yeomans and Erin Minervini.  Baylee Sparks tossed a complete game in the circle, scattering eight hits and allowing just two earned runs.

Illinois College improved to 17-9 overall, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 10-20.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Saturday with a home conference doubleheader against Defiance College at 1 p.m.
