Softball Falls Twice on Saturday at Defiance

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College relied on a strong offensive effort to earn a doubleheader sweep over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 8-4 and 9-4 on Saturday afternoon in Ohio.

In the opener, Defiance scored six runs in its final at-bat to earn an 8-4 victory.  Brooke Gostomsky led the Yellow Jacket offense with three hits and four RBIs, including a three-run home run.

Jessica Will led the Rose-Hulman offense with three singles, one run scored and one RBI.  Maddie Struble added a pair of doubles with two RBIs.  Michelle Korf, Jessica Thuer and Ellissa Eckert had a single and a run each.  Korf recorded three strikeouts in a complete game in the circle.

In the nigthcap, Defiance jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Rose-Hulman answered with four runs in the sixth inning to try a late rally.  The Fightin' Engineers pounded out five hits, including a two-RBI single by Morgan Dreyer, to close the gap.  Jamie Kimbler was able to thwart the rally and secure the win for Defiance.

Struble, Alexis Price and Cassidy Yeomans led the Rose-Hulman offense with two hits each.  Struble scored one run, while Yeomans had a double and one RBI.  Price was 2-2 with one run scored.  Eckert and Janel Lake contributed one single and one run each.

The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by Megan Warren with a 4-4 performance that included a triple and three RBIs.

Defiance improved to 20-13 overall, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 10-22 on the season.  The Fightin' Engineers host Webster University in the Go 4 The Goal doubleheader on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Engineer Softball Field.
