LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Preseason Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball favorite Transylvania University showed its strength with an 8-1 and 9-1 doubleheader sweep of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, Transylvania scored twice early and had consistent offense to earn an 8-1 victory. Junior Jessica Will led the Rose-Hulman offense with a leadoff hit in the fourth inning and later scoring the lone run on a Transylvania fielding error.
In the nightcap, Transylvania scored five times in the first inning to start the contest strong. Rose-Hulman's lone run came in the fourth, when Will started a streak of three consecutive singles to load the bases. Morgan Dreyer recorded an RBI with a ground out to score Will, before the rally was stopped by the Pioneers.
Transylvania improved to 18-7 and 4-0 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 9-9 and 1-3 in league play.
