LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineer softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Spalding Unvierstiy.
The Golden Eagles jumped out early in game one of the day, scoring the game's first four runs. In the top of the fourth inning Rose-Hulman cut the Spalding lead in half. Ellissa Eckert hit a fly ball to center field that was caught but an error in the field allowed both Erin Minervini and Michelle Korf to score on the play. Rose-Hulman trailed 4-2 at that point.
Spalding would add another run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI double, pushing their advantage to 5-2.
Leading the way in game one with multi-hit efforts for Rose-Hulman was Maddie Struble and Gabbi Markison. Struble posted a 2-4 day at the plate and Markison finished 2-3. As a team RHIT collected nine hits.
Rose-Hulman's rally in game two came up short as well as the Golden Eagles outlasted the Fightin' Engineers 5-4. Spalding struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Janel Lake and Jessica Will hit RBI singles in the top of the second inning to draw RHIT within a run. In the top of the third inning Rose-Hulman tied the game at 3-3 on a Morgan Dreyer single and error in the field.
Spalding responded quikly to the Fightin' Engineers' charge and scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third inning.
The game got interesting late, in the top of the seventh Rose-Hulman drew within a run at 5-4 after Maddie Struble hit a sacrifice fly to score Will. RHIT had two base runners on with one out but were unable to tie the game.
Offesnviely in game two, Dreyer led RHIT with a 3-4 effort at the plate. Will and Gabbi Markison added two hits apiece.
With the losses the Fightin' Engineers dropped to 9-11 on the season. RHIT will return to HCAC action Tuesday April 11 at Hanover College.
