Baseball Falls in Twinbill at MSJ; Game 3 Sunday

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Mount St. Joseph rallied in the nightcap to capture a baseball doubleheader sweep over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at the University of Cincinnati.

Mount St. Joseph captured the opener 12-3 before earning a 7-5 win in the nightcap.  The teams conclude their series on Sunday at noon.

In the opener, Mount St. Joseph scored nine runs in the first inning and went on to pick up a 12-3 victory.  Nathan Hunter led the Lions with three hits and four RBIs.  Alex Wagner allowed just three  hits over seven innings to earn the win.

The Rose-Hulman offense was led by Conner Shipley with a single and one RBI. Chris Sokoloff pitched four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to lead the pitching effort.

In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman built a 5-0 lead with three runs in the second and two in the fifth. Logan Schiessle led the Fightin' Engineer offense with three its and two RBIs. Drew Schnitz, Ryan Stachowski, Koby Close and Jacob Murray added one hit and one run each.

Jonathan Banks tossed 5.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs with five strikeouts, before Mount St. Joseph would rally to capture the win. Roman Rothwell had two hits, one run and one RBI, and Matt Hofmann balanced the attack with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Lions.

Mount St. Joseph improved to 21-18 and 15-11 in conference play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 18-21 and 16-10 in league games.  The teams conclude their three-game series with a noon game on Sunday at Marge Schott Stadium on the University of Cincinnati campus.
