FULTON, Mo. -- It took over 200 minutes of game time for the Rose-Hulman Institute of Tehcnology men's soccer team to score its first goal of the 2017 season. That first goal proved to be a decisive one as the Fightin' Engineers defeated North Central College 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday evening.
Both teams were evenly matched during regulation, using strong defenses against one another to keep a clean sheet. In the second overtime, Austin Webb played a ball out wide to Evan Cusmano on the left side. Cusmano then crossed the ball into the box and Will McGowen was able to get a touch on the ball at the near post. The ball then deflected off of a North Central player into the net, lifting RHIT to its first win of the Fall.
Senior goalie Carter Wright was strong between the posts, gobbling up six saves in his first win of the season. Offensively, Rose-Hulman took 12 shots, five of which were on goal.
North Central took 18 shots in the game, six of which were on goal. RHIT held an advantage on corner kicks with seven as opposed to the Cardinals' three.
Rose-Hulman improved to 1-1-0 on the young season. North Central dropped to 1-1-0. The Fightin' Engineers will return to action on Tuesday September 5 against Greenville University in their home opener. Kickoff from Intramural Field is set for 8 p.m.
