TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled Spalding University in a pair of tight contests before falling 2-1 and 5-4 in the 2018 softball home opener on Sunday.
In the opener, Rose-Hulman scored in the first inning and Spalding had single runs in the first and second before the pitchers took over. Michelle Korf pitched a complete game with three strikeouts for the Engineers, and Amber Kilburn picked up the win with three strikeouts for Spalding.
Mandi Routon led the Rose-Hulman offense with three singles in game one. Jessica Will added a single, a double and an RBI.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman led 4-2 early before Spalding scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to pick up the win. Abby Booker led the Spalding offense with a pair of hits, and Caroline Hale had a two-run double to put the Golden Eagles ahead for good.
Cydney Ogan blasted a two-run home run to pace the Fightin' Engineer offensive effort. Routon and Will were joined by Jessica Thuer with two hits each. Gabbi Markison also scored twice for Rose-Hulman.
The Fightin' Engineers stand 5-7 overall and return to action with doubleheaders at MacMurray and Eureka next weekend.
