TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior Conner Helbling launched a seventh inning home run to snap a 5-5 tie and give the Fightin' Engineers a 6-5 victory in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday night at Art Nehf Field.
Helbling hit a blast to straight away left field to cap a Rose-Hulman rally from a pair of three-run deficits. Wabash led 3-0 in the second and 5-2 in the sixth, but Rose-Hulman fought back with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh for the victory.
Davis Robeson led the Rose-Hulman offense with three hits, including two doubles. Ryan Stachowski added two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI, and Helbling also had two runs scored and one RBI. Luke Buehler and Conner Shipley had multiple-hit games with two singles each, including a two-run single by Buehler.
The offense made a winner out of Jacob Schult coming out of the Rose-Hulman bullpen. Schult tossed two scoreless innings with one strikeout, before Ben Yoss tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the save. Yoss relied on standout defensive plays by Shipley and Zach Witonsky for the final two outs.
Sean Roginski led the Wabash offense with three RBIs and Tyler Downing had a pair of hits.
Rose-Hulman improved to 5-12 with its second win in the last three games. Wabash dropped to 13-4 on the campaign. The Fightin' Engineers return to action Saturday at Mount St. Joseph in the first HCAC doubleheader of the season.
