Jacksonville, Illinois. - The Rose-Hulman softball team rolled to two wins on Tuesday afternoon against MacMurray College. The Fightin' Engineers scored a total of 25 runs between the two contests.
Game 1 - Rose-Hulman 14, MacMurray 0 - 5 Innings
Rose-Hulman was stellar at the plate and in the pitcher's circle in the first contest of the day. The Fighitn' Engineers plated 14 runs, a season high, on 12 hits. RHIT plated 10 of its 14 runs in the second inning. Nine different Engineers recorded at least one hit in the win.
Cassidy Yeomans started the scoring for Rose with an RBI single up the middle. Yeomans finished 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Jene Williams hit a two-run triple that made the score 3-0 in favor of Rose in the 2nd inning. Maddie Struble continued her hot play of late, hitting a bases-clearing double that pushed Rose's lead to 7-0. Struble would finish with 4 RBI. A few batters later, Bryly Shipman kept the offense going in the 2nd frame with an RBI double to left.
Later in the game, Gabbi Markison and Jenny Miller would connect on extra base hits that would each plate another Engineer. Markison finished 2-4 with two runs scored. Miller went 1-2 with two runs scored and two walks. RHIT third baseman Cydney Ogan finished 2-3.
Rose starter pitcher Michelle Korf had one of her strongest outings of the season. Korf allowed just two hits in five innings of work and picked up two strikeouts.
Game 2 - Rose-Hulman 11, MacMurray 3 - 5 Innings
The Fightin' Engineer offense pounded out 13 more hits in the second game of the day as Rose topped MacMurray by a final score of 11-3.
Rose-Hulman scored five runs to open the game and never looked back. Gabbi Markison hit an RBI double that started the RHIT rally. After a passed ball allowed Markison to score, Jessica Will hit an RBI groundout to move the score to 3-0. Cassidy Yeomans continued her strong day and hit an RBI triple. Yeomans' triple was followed by an RBI triple from Jene Williams.
Rose would add another run in the top of the second, a solo home run from senior Jenny Miller. A Miller single in the top of the 4th increased Rose's advantage over the Highlanders to 7-0. Maddie Struble followed with an RBI single of her own to give RHIT an 8-0 lead.
Rose-Hulman put the game out of reach in the top of the 5th inning. Markison drilled a two-run home run to left and Struble hit a run-scoring double to give Rose-Hulman an 11-3 lead.
Gabbi Markison led the offense with a 3-4 day at the plate, three RBI and three runs scored. Jenny Miller went 2-2 with four runs scored and two RBI. Mandi Routon went 2-4 with two runs scored. Bryly Shipman chipped in two hits and Maddie Struble added a pair of RBI.
Pitcher Alexis Price was solid all game. She allowed three runs and scattered nine hits over five innings of work.
The doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon improved Rose's overall record to 7-11. The Fightin' Engineers will have a quick turnaround and will host Hanover College tomorrow in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Rose-Hulman Softball Field. Game one is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Game two is expected to begin around 7:30 p.m.
