HANOVER, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on a strong offensive performance to earn an 11-5 and 12-1 doubleheader sweep of Hanover College in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.
In the opener, Rose-Hulman scored three times in the first and seventh innings to capture an 11-5 victory. The Fightin' Engineers pounded out 14 hits and scored in four consecutive innings from the fifth through the eighth.
Ryan Stachowski led the Rose-Hulman offense with three hits, including two doubles, with two runs scored and one RBI. Conner Shipley, Davis Robeson, Conner Helbling and Zach Donnelly added two singles each. Shipley had two RBIs, Helbling scored twice and Luke Calabrese contributed a two-run double in the first inning to the offensive attack.
Rose-Hulman's hitting was more than enough cushion in a strong pitching performance from Clayton Mayfield. The right-hander scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs with six strikeouts in the victory. Ben Yoss finished the game with two scoreless innings out of the Engineer bullpen.
Game two featured even more Rose-Hulman offense, highlighted by a five-run seventh inning and a pair of three run frames in a 12-1 win. Shipley led Rose-Hulman with five RBIs on three singles and two runs scored. Stachowski had another three-hit game that featured two more doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Robeson added a pair of singles, two RBIs and one run scored. Sean Casey contributed two singles with two runs scored, and Harris Camp had a double and a single with two runs scored and one RBI.
Chuck Alexa benefited from the offense and tossed seven stellar innings to pick up the win. Alexa allowed just six hits and one run with three strikeouts in the start. Dan Connolly and Jacob Schult recorded the final six outs to secure the win.
Rose-Hulman improved to 8-16 overall and 3-4 in league play, while Hanover dropped to 4-18 and 1-7. The Fightin' Engineers return to home action with a doubleheader against Transylvania University on Saturday starting at noon.
