Rose-Hulman Baseball Splits with Defending HCAC Champions Earlham

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- It was a tale of two games as Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Earlham College split a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Thursday night at Art Nehf Field.

In the opener, Earlham scored five times in the first inning and three times in the second to pull away for a 14-4 victory.  Addison Robertson and Danny Dopp hit home runs for the Quakers, with Robinson finishing 3-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs.  Kendal Baker added four RBIs, and Walter Talcott struck out seven in six innings to improve to 4-0 on the season.

For Rose-Hulman, David Burnside led the offense with three singles.  Conner Shipley and Logan Cody had a pair of hits, Zach Donnelly recorded two RBIs, and Trevor Dallio allowed no earned runs with three strikeouts in four innings to pace the pitching effort.

In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman pounded out 19 hits to handle Earlham 18-2.  The Fightin' Engineers scored three times in the first and sixth innings; six times in the second; and four times in the fifth to propel a balanced offensive attack.

Cody led the game two performance with two doubles, two singles, four runs scored and four RBIs.  Luke Calabrese added three singles and four RBIs.  Sean Casey contributed a single and a double along with four RBIs in the contest.

Other Engineers with multiple hits included Shipley with two singles and three runs scored; Burnside with two singles, four runs scored and two RBIs; and Donnelly with a single, double and two runs scored.

Clayton Mayfield improved to 2-2 on the season with a strong pitching performance in game two.  Mayfield allowed just four hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts.  Dan Connolly and Stone Brogan pitched one scoreless inning each to complete the victory.

Earlham stands 16-6 overall and 2-2 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman has a 6-14 mark and is 1-2 in league play.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Saturday with another conference doubleheader at Manchester.
