Late Rally Falls Short as Manchester Sweeps Rose-Hulman

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology had a late rally in the nightcap before falling in both ends of a baseball doubleheader at Manchester University on Sunday.

In the opener, Brandon Eck allowed just five singles with four strikeouts to pick up the win in a 4-0 Manchester victory.  Tyler LaFollette hit a triple with two runs scored, and Matt Pritz had two RBIs for the Spartans.

Five Fightin' Engineers had a single to lead the offense in game one.  Luke Buehler had a strong seven-inning performance on the mound, scattering seven hits with five strikeouts.  Buehler allowed just two earned runs in the effort.

In game two, Rose-Hulman scored twice in the top of the eighth and loaded the bases before narrowly falling 4-3 to the host Spartans.  Conner Helbling had an RBI ground out and Marcus Wechselberger drew an RBI walk to bring the score within one run, before Manchester recorded the final out to halt the threat.

Sean Casey and Davis Robeson led the Rose-Hulman offense with two hits each.  Wechselberger added a single, an RBI and two walks.

Trever Bruno struck out two and allowed four runs in the sixth, before Dan Connolly and Ben Yoss pitched the Engineers through the final two innings.

For Manchester, Taylor Kopplin pitched eight innings and allowed three runs, before John Magers recorded the final three outs for the save. Nick Rush hit a solo home run, and Pritz had two hits with two RBIs to lead the Spartan offense in game two.

Manchester improved to 13-11 and 3-3 in league play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 6-16 and 1-4.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Tuesday at Hanover College in another HCAC doubleheader.
