GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology opened the DePauw University Invitational with a sweep of two matches on Friday, including a victory over a team receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll.
In the opener, Rose-Hulman hit .349 for the match in a 25-17, 25-11, 25-12 victory over Concordia Chicago. The team's most impressive offensive set was the second, as Rose-Hulman hit .583 with just one error as a team in the set.
Bailey MacInnis led the Fightin' Engineer offense with nine kills. Katie Orbeta had a standout all-around match with 17 assists, 10 digs, five service aces and seven kills at a .600 hitting percentage.
Grace Beach joined Orbeta with seven kills in the opener. Defensively, Katryna Dahlberg had a team-high 22 digs and Maria Bruner recorded five total blocks (two solo, three assist). Marissa Gollnick also contributed 16 assists and three blocks to the performance.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman battled its way to a 29-27, 19-25, 27-25, 25-19 victory over perennial national contender Millikin. The Fightin' Engineers earned a tight set one win, then later rallied from 24-21 down to win the critical third set.
MacInnis led the offense with 14 kills. Gollnick added six kills and a team-high six block assists. Bruner contributed five total blocks and Mia Styczynski contributed four total blocks to a strong front row performance.
Orbeta paced the Engineers with 22 assists and added 11 digs. Dahlberg had a team-high 30 digs. Adekite Oladipupo and Gollnick added 14 and 10 digs, respectively.
Rose-Hulman improved to 9-3 with its fifth consecutive win, while Concordia Chicago dropped to 4-6 and Millikin is 4-5. The Fightin' Engineers will face Muskingum and No. 1 ranked Calvin on Saturday at the DePauw Invitational.
