AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Three Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology pitchers combined on an Opening Day shutout as the Fightin' Engineers defeated Alma College 1-0 in the baseball spring trip opener on Monday.
Luke Buehler tossed seven shutout innings to pick up the victory. Buehler allowed just two singles and two walks with nine strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Stone Brogan and Ben Yoss added scoreless innings to secure the Rose-Hulman win. Brogan pitched out of a second-and-third, no-out jam with two strikeouts and a popout. Yoss retired all three hitters he faced to pick up the save.
The Rose-Hulman offense had chances to add extra runs, but a strong pitching performance by Alma kept the game close. Joseph Barrons tossed six shutout innings with seven strikeouts for the Scots before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Rose-Hulman's defense played a key role in the victory. Luke Calabrese made a diving, full extension play at third base to snag a base hit that would have scored an Alma run in the fourth inning, recording a force out to help thwart the best rally of the day by the Scots.
The scoreless tie was broken by the Rose-Hulman offense in the seventh inning. Ryan Stachowski opened the rally with a triple, and scored the game's lone run on an RBI single by Logan Cody.
Rose-Hulman stands 1-0 on the season and faces St. Mary's (Minn.) on Tuesday at 4 pm at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale.
