TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- A season-best crowd watched Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology knock off Millikin University 2-0 in women's soccer action on Grey Matters Awareness Day at the Engineer Intramural Field.
Free pizza, free T-shirts and free giveaways from The Herd helped attract the largest crowd of the season for Grey Matters Awareness Day. Rose-Hulman head coach Amy Helliwell is a brain cancer survivor, and the game is designed to bring attention to brain cancer while raising funds for St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Rose-Hulman scored twice in the first half to take control of the contest. Maddy Twetten found the back of the net in the 23rd minute on a pass from Jessica Wells. Sarah Shoemaker scored the second goal of the half on a double assist from Wells and Elle Vuotto.
Rose-Hulman controlled much of the action, outshooting Millikin 18-7 in the contest. Katie Demert recorded the shutout victory in goal with four saves.
Maggie Sheerin, Lane Lawrence and Twetten led the Rose-Hulman offense with three shots each.
The Fightin' Engineers improved to 3-2 with the victory, while Millikin dropped to 1-3-1. Rose-Hulman returns to action on Wednesday with a contest at Illinois Wesleyan.
