TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology finished second in the men's competition and came home fifth on the women's side at the 2020 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, concluded Saturday at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.
Franklin narrowly won the men's team score by just 16 points, by a 721-705 count, over Rose-Hulman. On the women's side, Franklin, Transylvania and Anderson captured the top three finishes in the team scoring.
Following the meet, Rose-Hulman won two HCAC special awards.  Derick Miller was named the HCAC Freshman of the Year, and Keith Crawford was named HCAC Men's Coach of the Year.
The Fightin' Engineers won eight men's events throughout HCAC championship weekend.  Jared Brown won the 50-freestyle (20.57) and 100-freestyle (45.77), with the 50-freestyle time ranking No. 2 in school history.  Brendan King also recorded a second-fastest time in school history to win the 500-freestyle in 4:39.34.
Other winners included Derick Miller in the 100-butterfly (49.84) and Shamus Sparling in the 1650-freestyle (16:49.36).Â
Three men's relay teams also claimed first-place honors. Rose-Hulman won the 200-freestyle relay, with Dutch Kipp, Zach Tate, Ryan Nikolic finishing in 1:23.64. The 200-medley relay team of William Kemp, Miller, Brown and Kipp won in 1:33.24. The 400-freestyle relay team of Tate, Kipp, King and Brown capped the meet with a winning time of 3:04.02.
The performance has included 11 runner-up finishes. Elisa Weber paced the women's effort with two runner-up finishes, coming home second with a new Rose-Hulman school record in the 200-breaststroke (2:27.82) and also a runner-up in the 400-individual medley (4:44.78).
Individual men's runner-up finishers were led by King with second place in the 200-freestyle (1:42.75) and 200-butterfly (1:53.87). Other second places were completed by Brown in the 100-butterfly (50.22); Kemp in the 400-individual medley (4:12.38); Kipp in the 200-individual medley (1:55.22); Logan McLaughlin in the 200-backstroke (1:54.77); and Tate in the 100-freestyle (46.56).
Rose-Hulman also had two relay second-place finishes. The men's 400-medley team of Kemp, Ethan Park, Miller and Brown finished in 3:27.19, and the 800-freestyle relay team of King, McLaughlin, Kipp and Tate finished in 6:56.83.
Third-place finishers included Kemp in the men's 100-backstroke (52.82); Miller in the men's 200-butterfly (1:54.04); Michelle Reese in women's 1-meter diving (372.55 points); Weber in the women's 200-individual medley (2:13.74); and the women's 200-medley relay team of Parker Brady, Weber, Natalija Pumpurs and Hailey Heidecker in 1:54.24.
Rose-Hulman completed the 2020 season with its third top-two men's finish in the HCAC standings. The Fightin' Engineers won the 2018 HCAC men's championships and were runner-ups in 2019 and 2020.
