TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology clinched the No. 1 seed for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament with a 5-1 win over Bluffton University on Senior Day Saturday.
With the victory, Rose-Hulman will host an opponent to be determined on Wednesday Nov. 3 in the HCAC Semifinal Round. Rose-Hulman would also host the HCAC Tournament Championship Match on Saturday Nov. 6 if the Fightin' Engineers advance in the Semifinal Round on Nov. 3.
Rose-Hulman improved to a perfect 8-0 with its eighth straight victory. The Fightin' Engineers also clinched at least a share of their third consecutive HCAC regular season championship with the win.
Prior to the match, four seniors were honored prior to their final weekend regular season home contest. Seniors honored included
Travis Bednarek,
George Bulger,
Colin Featherby and
Matt Fix.
Rose-Hulman then started the scoring early with a goal by
Takezo Kelly in the 2nd minute, on an assist from
Tatenda Mafa. Mafa found the back of the net in the 25th minute on a double assist by Kelly and
Caleb Urban.
The halftime lead reached 3-0 on a goal by
Colin Featherby in the 31st minute.
Bluffton answered with a goal by Dalton Taynor in the 63rd minute to close within 3-1.Â
Owen Trudt scored the final two goals, one on a double assist from
Luke Dawdy and
Elijah Hardersen and the second on an assist from
Tyler Eldridge.
Rose-Hulman improved to 11-4-1 and 8-0 in HCAC play, while Bluffton dropped to 7-7 and 3-5 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers will look for a perfect HCAC regular season record on Wednesday at home against Anderson.
