HCAC CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won a historically close Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, narrowly defeating Franklin College 738-732 in a 20-event, 3-day meet that concluded Sunday night at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.

Rose-Hulman earned its fourth men's swimming and diving conference championship in program history with the victory.  The Fightin' Engineers previously won CCIW championships in 2015 and 2016, and captured the HCAC title in 2018.

Transylvania came home third in the five-team meet, followed by Anderson and Manchester.

The meet outcome came down to the final race, the men's 400-yard freestyle relay.  The winning team in the relay would be crowned HCAC champions.  Rose-Hulman left no doubt in the outcome, with the team of Zach Tate, Dutch Kipp, Logan McLaughlin and Jared Brown winning in a time of 3:04.53 to top the Franklin effort (3:12.36) by almost eight seconds.

In a meet that every point counted, Rose-Hulman's 1-2-3-4 finish in the 100-freestyle on Sunday night proved a huge difference in the outcome.  Brown came home first, followed by Tyler Sommer, Ryan Nikolic and Tate.

The overall performance included 10 first-place efforts.  Rose-Hulman won four of the five relay events, which proved critical in the overall scoring.  The 200-freestyle relay team of Kipp, Nikolic, Sommer and Brown set a school record, the HCAC Open Record and a Vigo County Aquatic Center record by winning in a time of 1:22.22.  The mark topped the previous Rose-Hulman school record set by a CCIW championship team in 2016.

The 200-medley relay team of Nikolic, Derick Miller, Brown and Kipp added another school record with a time of 1:32.07.  Rose-Hulman also won the 800-freestyle relay in a time of 6:49.83 with the team of Evan Sellers, McLaughlin, Sommer and Brendan King.

Individually, Sellers picked up two key distance victories to also earn HCAC Newcomer of the Year honors.  He captured the 500-freestyle with a school and conference record time of 4:35.51.  Sellers also won the 1,650-freestyle with a time of 16:14.42.

Brown won two key sprint freestyle relay events by sweeping the 50 (20.85) and 100 (45.41) yard events.

Other event winners included Miller in the 100-butterfly (50.41); and King in the 200-freestyle (1:42.47).

The 400-medley relay team of McLaughlin, Ethan Park, Miller and Brown led the second-place finishers so far this weekend with a time of 3:26.31.

Individual runnner-ups included Brown in the 100-butterfly (50.64); Zach Eckstrom in the 1650-freestyle (16:44.63); King in the 500-freestyle (4:39.67); McLaughlin in the 100-backstroke (51.80) and 200-backstroke (1:52.31); Miller in the 200-butterfly (1:54.93); Sellers in the 200-freestyle (1:42.74); Sommer in the 50-freestyle (21.25) and 100-freestyle (46.41); and Lane Wagner in the 400-individual medley (4:13.42).

Third-place finishers also earning event medals this weekend included King in the 200-butterfly (1:54.96); Kipp in the 200-individual medley (1:55.95); Nikolic in the 100-backstroke (52.05) and 100-freestyle (46.44); and Sommer in the 200-freestyle (1:42.74).
