TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Anderson University split a pair of tight contests to open the 2021 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball season on Sunday at Art Nehf Field.
Anderson withstood a late Rose-Hulman rally to win the opener 6-5, before the Fightin' Engineers claimed the nightcap by a 7-5 margin.
In game one, Rose-Hulman led 4-2 before a four-run eighth inning put Anderson ahead 6-4. The Fightin' Engineers relied on an RBI fielder's choice to score
Josh Mesenbrink in the eighth inning to bring the margin down to 6-5. In the ninth, Rose-Hulman loaded the bases before a lineout to the outfield secure the 6-5 Anderson win.
Shaine Mitchell led the Rose-Hulman with three singles, one run scored, one RBI and one stolen base.
Harris Camp added two hits, including a double, with one RBI.
On the mound,
Matthew Rouse struck out five and allowed just two runs in five innings of work.
Schuyler Wilcox added 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts out of the bullpen.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman pounded out 15 hits in a 7-5 victory.
Manuel Lopez had the day's biggest hit with a two-run home run.
Camp had three singles, scored once and had one RBI.
Luke Calabrese pitched in with two hits, two runs scored and a double.
Adam Taylor added two hits with a double and
Ben Christiansen also had two hits.
Ben Yoss picked up the pitching victory with six strong innings of work.
Jacob Petrisko pitched the final three innings with five strikeouts to earn the save.
Rose-Hulman and Anderson are both 1-1 on the season. The Fightin' Engineers return home on Saturday to face Franklin in a 1 pm doubleheader.
