TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team split its Sunday home HCAC doubleheader with Hanover College, losing game one 5-4 and winning game two 9-7. Rose-Hulman moved to 12-10 on the season, while Hanover moved to 16-13.
Hanover snagged the early lead in game one, extending the lead by four in the seventh inning. Rose-Hulman fought back late with a two-run single by
Logan Cody in the seventh and a sacrifice fly to deep center field in the ninth by
AJ Ernst.Â
Hanover led 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth with one out and the bases loaded, and thwarted Rose-Hulman's late game rally by turning a game ending double play to clinch the victory.
The offensive effort in game one for Rose-Hulman was led by Cody, who finished 2-4 with two RBI's and one run scored. Ernst contributed two RBI's with one hit. Both
Adam Taylor and
Josh Mesenbrink recorded two hits each.Â
Game two began the same way as game one with Hanover scoring first. Rose-Hulman slowly regained and kept control, scoring in all but the second and fifth innings.Â
Hanover mounted a comeback which eventually fell short. In the top of the ninth, the first two Hanover batters reached safely, and later loaded the bases. With two outs, Zeke Porta smashed a grand slam off the left field foul post to cut the deficit to 9-7, which Rose-Hulman hung onto for the win.
Game two's offensive attack was led by
Harris Camp and
Luke Kluemper. Camp finished 2-4 with two RBI's and one run scored, while Kluemper also finished 2-4 with two RBI's. Ernst contributed two RBI's in game two as well.
Other offensive notes for Rose-Hulman in game two - Cody finished with four walks and
Shaine Mitchell stole three bases.
Ben Yoss earned the pitching win, tossing 5.1 innings and giving up three total runs but zero earned runs.
Brett Borcherding pitched 3.2 innings in relief and earned his second save of the season. Borcherding struck out seven.
The Fightin' Engineers return to action next Saturday, April 23 for another HCAC doubleheader against Bluffton University. First pitches are scheduled for 1pm and 4pm.
