TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology increased its winning streak to seven games and scored a combined 32 runs to sweep a baseball doubleheader at Anderson University on Tuesday.
Rose-Hulman scored eight runs in the first inning and pounded out 15 hits to earn a 17-4 win in the opener. The Fightin' Engineers added 13 hits with six extra-base hits to capture a 15-11 win in the nightcap.
In game one,
Shane Garner led the Rose-Hulman offense with three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.Â
Josh Mesenbrink scored three runs and added two hits with two RBIs.
Other Rose-Hulman players with multiple hits in the opener included
Luke Kluemper with a triple, single, two runs and one RBI;
Brett Tuttle with a single, double, two runs scored and three RBIs; and
AJ Ernst with a triple, single and three RBIs.
Other key offensive contributors in game one included
Shaine Mitchell,
Harris Camp and
Adam Taylor with two runs scored each.
Brett Borcherding picked up the win with six strong innings of work, allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts.Â
Paul Durell finished the game with a scoreless seventh and two strikeouts.
In the nightcap, both offenses brought strong performances in a 15-11 Rose-Hulman victory. Ernst led the offense with a home run, double, single, four runs scored and two RBIs.
Camp had the most all-around impact with three hits and the biggest play of the game defensively. He finished 3-4 at the plate with three runs scored, and also robbed Anderson of a grand slam in the late innings. With the score 15-9, Camp leaped over the wall and reached his glove over the fence to bring back a potential home run that would have trimmed the lead to two runs.
Other key offensive contributors included
Luke Calabrese with a double and four RBIs; Kluemper with two hits, one run and one RBI;
Manuel Lopez with two doubles, two runs and one RBI; and
Logan Cody with two runs scored and three walks.
Schuyler Wilcox picked up the win with 2.1 innings of one run relief, including three strikeouts.Â
Ian Kline recorded the final six outs to finish off the victory.
Rose-Hulman moved into outright second place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings at 18-10 and has now won its last seven games. The Fightin' Engineers return home to face Manchester University in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
