TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Bluffton University scored twice in the ninth inning and twice in the 11th inning to earn a come-from-behind 11-10 victory in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Postseason Series opener at Art Nehf Field on Friday night.
With the victory, Bluffton takes a 1-0 lead in the series. Rose-Hulman will need to win games on Saturday at 1 pm and an if necessary game that follows in order to advance to the HCAC Tournament, while Bluffton needs just one victory on Saturday.
Bluffton trailed 4-1 before scoring six runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-4 lead. Rose-Hulman immediately answered with a 5-run seventh inning to take a 9-7 advantage.Â
AJ Ernst hit a two-run double,
Luke Calabrese blasted a 2-run triple, and
Logan Cody had an RBI single as the Fightin' Engineers took the lead.
Bluffton rallied with two runs in the ninth inning to tie the score at 9-9 on a single by Adam Duncan. The Beavers added two runs in the 11th inning, and Cody brought Rose-Hulman within 11-10 in the 11th with a solo home run. The Fightin' Engineers put the tying run aboard in the 11th, but Jaden Jacques recorded the final three outs to pick up his first save of the season.
Duncan led the Bluffton offense with four hits and five RBIs. Parker Reynolds and Nick Diana scored twice for the Beavers. Spencer Garrison tossed four scoreless innings to pick up the victory, and Jacques earned the save.
Cody was the strongest hitter of the evening for Rose-Hulman with four hits, including a home run, and four RBIs.Â
Josh Mesenbrink and
Brett Tuttle each contributed two hits to the offense.Â
Adam Taylor, Ernst and Calabrese each scored two runs for the Fightin' Engineers.
Jacob Petrisko earned the tough-luck no-decision for the Engineers, allowing just one earned run in 6.2 innings of work.
The winner of this weekend's Best-of-3 series will advance to the 5-team HCAC Tournament that begins on Thursday May 20.
