GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Washington University in St. Louis relied on a strong defensive effort to top Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 61-44 in a battle of previously unbeaten women's basketball teams on Saturday at the Midwest Challenge at DePauw University.
Rose-Hulman and WashU competed in a tight battle for much of the first half, with the Fightin' Engineers taking a 15-13 lead early in the second quarter on a 3-pointer by
Nola Wilson.Â
Jamie Baum later tied the score at 19-19 with a score at the 4:37 mark of the second quarter.
WashU relied on its defense to answer with a 15-0 run that extended into the third quarter, and the Bears were able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Maya Arnott led the WashU offense with 13 points as the Bears shot 40% from the field and recorded a 41-30 rebounding edge as keys to the win.
Jamie Baum paced the Rose-Hulman offense with 14 points and tied for team-high honors with 7 rebounds. Â
Mira Randolph also reached double figures with 12 points.Â
Nola Wilson had 7 points, and
Rose Burnham scored 5 points with 7 rebounds.Â
CK Gallegos-Rodriguez also tied for team-high honors with 7 rebounds for the Fightin' Engineers.
Rose-Hulman dropped to 2-1 on the campaign and faces No. 24 ranked DePauw University in the third-place game of the Midwest Challenge on Sunday at 2 pm in Greencastle.
