TERRE HAUTE, Ind -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball downs Defiance College on Sunday afternoon 51-42, advancing to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinal matchup on Friday, February 25. The Fightin' Engineers will battle No. 2 nationally ranked Transylvania University at 5 pm.
Ashley Black began the game on fire for the Engineers, knocking down four three pointers in the opening quarter. Rose-Hulman later used a 15-0 run to close out the second quarter to lead 30-12 at the half.
Defiance responded in the third quarter with a 12-0 run, closing a massive 22-point deficit in a three-minute span.
The Fightin' Engineers were held scoreless to open the final quarter, but a pair of layups by
Jordan Barlow, free throws by
Rowan Hein,
Jamie Baum, and Black put the Engineers ahead 46-33 with 4:09 remaining in the game.
Hein engineered the Rose-Hulman offense with another balanced effort. She finished with 11 points, a season-high five steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Black ended her day with 13 points and four rebounds.
Jordan Barlow added seven points and eight rebounds.
Rose-Hulman improved to 12-8 on the season, and Defiance concluded their season at 13-10. The winner of the HCAC tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
