Shutout Leads to Opening Day Softball Split; RHIT Plays Two on Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology opened the 2022 softball season with a 6-0 win over Regis (Mass.) and a narrow 7-5 loss to Eastern (Pa.) on Monday night at the Legends Way Ballfields.

Freshman Ariel Thomasson highlighted the day by tossing a three-hit shutout to lead the Rose-Hulman Engineers past the Regis (MA) Pride 6-0.

Thomasson (1-0) went the distance for Rose-Hulman (1-0), giving up three hits, walking none and striking out four.

Offensively in game one, the Engineers were led by senior Angela Boulboulle, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and two RBIs. Junior Ashley Pinkham also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior Nicole Lang also helped out for Rose-Hulman, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate including a triple.

In the nightcap, Lang again led the offense with a home run, double and an RBI in a 2-4 performance.  Senior Gabby Davidson added a double, walk and two RBIs.  Sophomore Reagan Knabe walked three times to add runners on base.

Rose-Hulman led 5-2 early, but Eastern scored three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth to pick up the victory.

GAME 1 - ROSE-HULMAN 6, REGIS 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers took the lead for good in the second, scoring for the first time in the inning. Rose-Hulman scored three times, picking up one on an RBI base knock off the bat of Pinkham.

The Engineers also added runs in the fifth and sixth innings on the way to the 6-0 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Engineers first put runs on the board in the second inning. Rose-Hulman scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Davidson.

The Eagles then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 3-2 until the Engineers expanded their advantage in the third. Rose-Hulman managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the score to 5-2 in favor of the Engineers. The Engineers were unable to hold the lead, as Eastern (PA) scored five times over the remaining four innings to grab the 7-5 win.
