TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on a strong pitching performance from Matthew Rouse to highlight a 6-2 win over Carthage College on Friday night.

Rouse allowed just 3 hits and 1 unearned run in 7 innings of work to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Shane Garner led the way offensively for the Engineers, going 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Josh Mesenbrink added a 2-for-4 effort with a triple, a walk and an RBI. Dalton Busboom added two walks and an RBI.

Rose-Hulman improved to 6-4 on the season and returns to action against Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday at 2 pm.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers were trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Rose-Hulman's offense had a good inning, putting three runs on the scoreboard.

The Red Men failed to push any runs across before the Engineers built on their lead in the sixth inning. Rose-Hulman put up two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Mesenbrink, which brought the Engineers lead to 5-1.

Rose-Hulman held Carthage without a run before building their lead to 6-1 in the eighth inning. Carthage put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Rose-Hulman still coasted to the 6-2 win.
