TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team scored early and often and relied on strong pitching to pick up a 13-1 win over Illinois Tech on Saturday.

Rose-Hulman scored four runs in the first inning and added five more in the fourth inning to pull away and secure the win.

Ian Kline tossed five innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing four walks and striking out five to pick up the victory.  Paul Durell added two shutout innings and one strikeout.

In the batter's box, the Engineers were led by Drew Roberts, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Kade Kline finished 1-for-3 with a base-clearing triple.

Nathan Burke and Brett Tuttle also contributed at the plate. Burke finished 2-for-2 with a walk, one RBI, and one run scored. Tuttle added a RBI triple and a run scored.

Rose-Hulman improved to 7-4 on the season.  The Fightin' Engineers play their final game in the Rose-Hulman Invitational against Illinois Tech on Sunday at 3 pm.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Rose-Hulman's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of Nathan Burke.

The Hawks failed to push any runs across before the Engineers built on their lead in the fourth inning. The Rose-Hulman offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of Kade Kline, which brought the Engineers lead to 9-1.

Rose-Hulman kept Illinois Tech without a run before building their lead to 11-1 the following inning.

Rose-Hulman held the Hawks scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Engineers added two runs when a single from Roberts scored Josh Mesenbrink and Ben Christiansen, bringing the Rose-Hulman advantage to 13-1. The score remained 13-1 for the rest of the game, as the Engineers coasted to the win.
