Worstell No-Hitter Leads 7-1 Softball to Sweep; Florida Trip Ends Friday

LEESBURG, Fla. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman Phoebe Worstell threw the 4th no-hitter in Rose-Hulman softball history to propel a Thursday doubleheader sweep at the Sleepy Hollow Softball Complex.

Worstell struck out 12 hitters and tossed Rose-Hulman's first softball no-hitter since 2016 in a 12-1 victory over Finlandia.  She allowed just two total base runners in a performance that included no walks to go along with 12 strikeouts.

Offensively, Angela Boulboulle and Ariel Thomasson each went 4-for-4 in the Finlandia victory.  Boulboulle smashed a double, three singles, scored three times and had three RBIs.  Thomasson added four singles, four RBIs and scored once.

Nicole Lang contributed a single, double and two runs scored.  Gabby Davidson also had multiple hits with two singles, one run and one RBI.

Thomasson provided the pitching and Worstell had the key hit of the day to propel a 4-3 win over Concordia Moorhead in the nightcap.

Thomasson improved to 4-0 in Florida with a complete-game effort and only one earned run allowed.  She struck out six to win for the fourth consecutive day.

Worstell snapped a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth iwth the eventual game winning single to highlight a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.  She also scored one run with one RBI.

MaKenzie Morgan contributed two singles, one run and one RBI, and Hailey Hofmann added two singles and one run scored as part of the the come-from-behind win.  Concordia Moorhead led 3-1 early, but Rose-Hulman scored twice in the second and once in the fifth to earn the win.

Rose-Hulman improved to 7-1 for the first time in softball program history after Thursday's sweep.  The Fightin' Engineers conclude their Florida trip with games on Friday against Chatham (10 am) and Cabrini (12:15 pm).

GAME 1: ROSE-HULMAN 12, FINLANDIA 1 on a Phoebe Worstell NO-HITTER!

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Rose-Hulman's offense started clicking and put up seven runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Thomasson.

The Engineers then held the Lions scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Rose-Hulman brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Thomasson's single, which brought the score to 9-0 in favor of the Engineers.

Finlandia narrowed Rose-Hulman's lead to 9-1 before the Engineers stretched the advantage to 12-1 in the fifth inning. The Engineers recorded three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-RBI double from Boulboulle. The score remained 12-1 for the rest of the game, as Rose-Hulman coasted to the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Morgan came across to score the lone run of the inning for Rose-Hulman and get them on the board.

The Engineers lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the second trailing 3-1. Rose-Hulman picked up two runs when a single from Morgan scored Worstell and freshman Hailey Hofmann, which evened the score at 3-3.

That 3-3 tie turned into a 4-3 Rose-Hulman lead in the fifth. The Engineers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Worstell. The score remained 4-3 for the rest of the game, as Rose-Hulman held on for the win.
