TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled through the rain and two extra inning deficits to earn a dramatic 8-7 win over Hanover College to split a softball doubleheader late Thursday night.
The Fightin' Engineers fell 4-1 in the opener, before rallying from deficits of 6-3 and 7-6 in extra innings to win 8-7 in the ninth inning and split the twinbill.
Baylee Uhrick provided the drama with a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to finish the comeback and give Rose-Hulman the win. Uhrick also picked up the pitching victory with her ninth inning performance.
Phoebe Worstell blasted two home runs to help the Fightin' Engineers force extra innings in a 3-3 tie. Hanover took a 6-3 lead in the 8th inning with three runs, but an RBI single from Ariel Thomasson and a two-run double from Nicole Lang tied the score at 6-6 and forced a ninth inning.
Hanover scored once in the ninth inning to make the score 7-6, but Katie Palmer tied the score at 7-7 with an RBI single. Uhrick would later provide the game winning hit to score Gabby Davidson with the winning run.
Worstell led the offense with two home runs scored, two runs scored and two RBIs. MaKenzie Morgan, Thomasson, Kennedy Michnewicz and Palmer also had two hits as part of Rose-Hulman's 14-hit attack.
The dramatic contest featured a 45-minute delay after a stray heavy rainstorm passed through the Rose-Hulman Softball Field.
In the opener, Thomasson led the Rose-Hulman effort with two doubles and six pitching strikeouts. Worstell drove home the game's only run with an RBI single to end an epic 13-pitch at bat.
Uhrick added 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in the opener.
Rose-Hulman stands 16-14 overall and needs one victory in its final home doubleheader against Anderson to secure a winning season. Hanover dropped to 13-17 on the campaign, but the Panthers clinched an HCAC Tournament bid with their game one victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Engineers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Rose-Hulman got an RBI single from sophomore Kennedy Michnewicz, scoring Thomasson from third base.
The Panthers failed to push any runs across before the Engineers built on their lead in the third inning. Rose-Hulman picked up a run on Worstell's one-out solo home run off of Lauren Beaman, which brought the Engineers lead to 2-0.
Hanover fought back to even the ballgame at two before Rose-Hulman reclaimed a 3-2 advantage in the fifth inning. The Engineers added a run on Worstell's one-out solo home run off Beaman.
Rose-Hulman lost the lead they built in the fifth, but got back on the scoreboard in the eighth trailing 6-3. The three-run fram for the Engineers was puncuated by a two-RBI double from Lang. evening the score at 6-6.
Hanover then broke the tied and took a 7-6 lead before Rose-Hulman scored two runs in the bottom half of the ninth to grab the win, walking it off on an RBI single off the bat of Uhrick.
