Strong Offense Leads RHIT Softball to Sweep Over Oberlin

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team showed its offensive prowess in a 16-6 and 9-4 doubleheader sweep over Oberlin College on Sunday at the Engineer Softball Field.

In the opener, Rose-Hulman pounded out 17 hits in the 10-run victory.  MaKenzie Morgan and Ashley Pinkham each had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Fightin' Engineer offense.  Morgan had a double with three runs scored, and Pinkham scored twice.

Angela Boulboulle added a double, single and four RBIs to the offensive performance.  Nicole Lang had two hits and three RBIs with one run scored.

Other Engineers with multiple hits included Kenned Michnewicz with two singles, two runs scored and one RBI; and winning pitcher Baylee Uhrick with two runs scored and two singles.

Uhrick recorded one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work, before Phoebe Worstell finished the game with 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.

In the nightcap, five Rose-Hulman players had two hits each in a solid offensive performance in the 9-4 win.

Morgan had two doubles, scored one run and had one RBI.  Pinkham also had two doubles with two runs scored and one RBI.

Ariel Thomasson had a single, double and three runs scored with one RBI to provide depth.  Lang contributed two signles and two RBIs with one run scored.  Michnewicz had another two-hit day with two singles, one run and one RBI.

Uhrick added a two-run pinch hit single to the offense.  Alyssa Pinkston pitched five innings and left with a 4-4 tied score before Rose-Hulman took the lead for good with five runs in the sixth inning.  Thomasson pitched two scoreless innings to finish the victory.

Rose-Hulman stands 13-5 on the season and returns to action at Defiance College in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday April 9.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers were trailing 3-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Rose-Hulman's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Boulboulle.

The Engineers then held the Yeomen scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Rose-Hulman brought home a pair, with one run driven in by junior Nicole Lang's single, which brought the Engineers lead to 6-3.

Rose-Hulman held Oberlin scoreless before expanding their lead to 10-3 the following inning. The Engineers bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Pinkham.

The Yeomen fought back, closing the gap to 10-6 until Rose-Hulman added some insurance in the fourth. The Engineers scored six runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Boulboulle and a two-run double from Morgan, bringing the Rose-Hulman advantage to 16-6. The score remained 16-6 for the rest of the game, as the Engineers coasted to the win.

The Engineers were trailing 2-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Rose-Hulman got on the board thanks to Pinkham's RBI double with one out.

The Engineers kept the deficit at 2-1 before taking the lead in the fourth. Rose-Hulman scored three times, picking up one on an RBI base knock off the bat of Lang, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Engineers.

Oberlin clawed back to even the ballgame at four before Rose-Hulman reclaimed a 9-4 advantage in the sixth inning. The Engineers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run single off the bat of freshman Baylee Uhrick. The score remained 9-4 for the rest of the game, as Rose-Hulman coasted to the win.
