Rose-Hulman Baseball Splits Wednesday Twinbill with Hanover

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won a wild game one 18-15 before falling 10-3 to Hanover College in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Art Nehf Field.

In the opener, senior Brett Tuttle led a 13-hit attack with four hits, including a double, with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Manuel Lopez and Harrison Finch scored three runs each, with Finch batting 2-3 with two RBIs.  Adam Taylor added a pair of hits and scored twice.

The offensive explosion also included three RBIs from Colter Couillard-Rodak and Josh Mesenbrink.

Adam Taylor highlighted the pitching performance with two strikeouts to pick up his second save and close out the victory.

In the nightcap, Hanover scored seven runs in the 4th inning to pull away and earn a 10-3 victory.

Couillard-Rodak led the Fightin' Engineer offense with three hits, and Kade Kline drew three walks to provide depth.  Rose-Hulman pitchers recorded 13 strikeouts on the evening.

Rose-Hulman stands 10-7 on the season and 1-3 in HCAC play, while Hanover is 8-14 and 3-3 in conference play.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Saturday at Manchester University.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 4-0, the Engineers first put runs on the board in the second inning. Rose-Hulman's offense started clicking and put up eight runs, including a one-run double off the bat of Tuttle.

The Engineers then held the Panthers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Rose-Hulman brought home a pair, with one run driven in by senior Josh Mesenbrink's single, which brought the score to 10-4 in favor of the Engineers.

Rose-Hulman's lead had disappeared once the seventh inning came around and turned into a 12-10 Hanover advantage, when the Engineers re-gained control at 17-12. The Engineers bats heated up in the inning, scoring seven runs, including a two-run single off the bat of senior Nathan Burke.

The Panthers gained ground, closing the gap to 17-15 until Rose-Hulman added some insurance in the eighth. The Engineers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Tuttle, bringing the Rose-Hulman advantage to 18-15. The score remained 18-15 for the rest of the game, as the Engineers held on for the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Rose-Hulman got on the board thanks to Couillard-Rodak's RBI double with one out.

The Engineers lost the lead they built in the third, but got back on the board in the fifth trailing 7-1. Rose-Hulman scored a run when Kline drew a walk from Jack Jennings that scored senior Adam Taylor, which tightened the Panthers lead to 7-2.

Rose-Hulman kept the Panthers off the board before narrowing the gap to 7-3 in the seventh. The Engineers were unable to get any closer, as Hanover added three runs to their tally on the way to a 10-3 final.
