KOKOMO, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored twice in the eighth in a late rally, but fell short 5-3 to Earlham College in the opener of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on Thursday at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.

Nathan Burke had an RBI pinch-hit single and Brett Tuttle hit a sacrifice fly to bring Rose-Hulman's 5-1 deficit within 5-3 in the eighth.  Jacob Renner was able to pick up the final three outs for Earlham to pick up the save, after Justin Dillhoff tossed seven innings to pick up the win.

Kade Kline led the Rose-Hulman offense with two singles and one run scored.  Colter Couillard-Rodak and Andy Krajecki added one hit and one run, and Manuel Lopez had an RBI double to bring home the first Engineer run.

Ian Kline had three strikeouts in five innings of work, and Michael Yager tossed three scoreless innings to lead the Rose-Hulman pitching performance.

The Fightin' Engineers (25-12) return to action on Friday at 12:30 pm with a matchup against Hanover College.  The winner will return to action at 6:30 pm on Friday in another tournament elimination game.  The tournament continues through Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers were trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Rose-Hulman got on the board thanks to Lopez's RBI double with one out.

The Quakers expanded their lead to 5-1 before the Engineers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the eighth. Burke's run-scoring single highlighted an inning where Rose-Hulman scored twice, which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Quakers. The Engineers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
