TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team opened their 2023-24 HCAC campaign with a 83-72 road win over the Anderson Ravens.
The game was tight early with neither team able to pull away. Anderson would on a 7-0 run in the middle of the second quarter to take their biggest lead of the game at 30-23. However, the Fightin' Engineers would battle back quickly to tie at at 30 with a three from
Emilia Diaz and buckets from
Grace Roland and
Sophia Reese.
The Ravens would go into the halftime break leading 37-34, but early in the second half, the Fightin' Engineers would answer with an 8-0 run of their own to take the 44-41 lead. Rose-Hulman would not stop there as they would win the third quarter 21-13 and take a 5-point lead into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Rose-Hulman would keep up their aggressiveness and extend their lead to 11, their biggest lead of the game at 66-55. After that, the Fightin' Engineers had an answer for every potential Anderson run, and the Fightin' Engineers would hold on for a 83-72 victory on the road.
Manuella Shomba led the Fightin' Engineers in both scoring and rebounding for the second consecutive game with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Shomba earned her first-career double-double and recorded her first-ever game with double-digit rebounds.
Roland tied her career-high with 16 points and added four rebounds.
Ashley Black joined them in double figures with 14 points that included a 8-8 effort from the charity stripe, and she led the team with 4 assists.
The Fightin' Engineers shot over 90% from the free throw line at 19-21 to help seal the 83-72 victory.
With the win, Rose-Hulman improves to 2-4 on the year and 1-0 in the HCAC. The Fightin' Engineers will hit the road for the fifth time this season on Saturday as they travel to Bluffton to take on the Beavers.
