TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's volleyball team brought home a 3-0 sweep of Bluffton to earn their spot in the HCAC Tournament next week. The Fightin' Engineers improve to 14-13 on the season and 4-5 in the HCAC.
The Fightin' Engineers honored their four seniors,
Allie Fults,
Sophia Koop,
Kylie Rathbun, and
Kate Wood, prior to the game, and the Rose-Hulman fans brought the energy to support the team.
In the opening set, Rose-Hulman came out a little slow, and Bluffton was able to take an early lead. The two teams would battle back and forth until it was 18-18. The Fightin' Engineers proceeded to win five of the next six points and cruise to a 25-20 win in the opening set.
The second set was all Fightin' Engineers from the get-go as the team would tally 14 kills to 0 service errors in the set. They tallied a .467 hitting percentage and turned their quick 7-1 lead into an 18-4 domination.
The final set was just like the first, back and forth the entire way. The biggest lead of the entire set was three points until the Fightin' Engineers were able close it out on match point for a 25-21 victory and a 3-0 sweep.
Sophia Koop led the team on senior day with 14 kills and 0 hitting errors for a .467 hitting percentage. The senior duo of
Kate Wood and
Allie Fults would add 8 and 6 kills each.
Jillian Gregg led the team with 30 assists, and she added a career-high 17 digs.
Kylie Rathbun led the team with 3 service aces.
Lily Ebright also added 22 digs for 9.33 digs per set. Fults and Wood added 5 and 4 blocks, and
Sydney Naibauer also contributed 3 in the win.
The Fightin' Engineers will earn the #5 seed and travel to #4 Manchester with an Earlham loss tonight. With an Earlham win tonight, Rose-Hulman will be the #6 seed and will travel to Hanover to take on the Panthers.
