TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore
Phoebe Worstell became the first player in school history to throw two career softball no-hitters to highlight an opening day sweep over Blackburn College.
Worstell struck out six and walked just two in throwing a no-hitter in the 4-0 game one victory. Worstell also contributed a two-run double and an RBI single to the Rose-Hulman offense in the game.
The no-hitter marks the 5th in Rose-Hulman softball history. Other no-hitters were Worstell against Finlandia on March 3, 2021; Jenny Miller against Northwestern (Minn.) in 2016; Jordan Goslee with the school's only perfect game against Hanover in 2009; and Tabatha Doughty against Centre in 2001.
Offensively, Worstell finished 2-2 with a single, double and three RBIs to lead the game one offense.Â
Katelyn Sarvis added a double, single and two runs scored.Â
Nicole Lang contributed two singles and one RBI to the balanced offensive attack.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman relied on three home runs and a 7-run fourth inning to pick up an 11-3 victory.
MaKenzie Morgan, Lang and Worstell paced the Fightin' Engineers with home runs. Worstell scored three runs and had two hits with one RBI. Morgan was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI; Lang was also 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Other key offensive contributors included
Ashley Pinkham with two singles, one run and one RBI;
Jadyn Winkler with a single, double, one run and one RBI; and Sarvis with a double and two RBIs.
The offensive outburst helped Pinkham picked up a win with a complete game in the pitching circle. Pinkham scattered nine hits with six strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Rose-Hulman improved to 4-6 on the season, while Blackburn dropped to 5-5. The Fightin' Engineers host Eureka College on Monday at 5 pm in another double at the RHIT Softball Field.
