PIEDMONT, Ga. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team brought home a pair of wins in their Saturday doubleheader to close out their spring trip. The Fightin' Engineers beat Bridgewater 8-6 in game 1, and they beat Ferrum 13-12 in game 2.
In the first game, the Fightin' Engineers were able to put up seven runs on just three hits to take an early 7-4 lead. Bridgewater would chip away with a couple of runs in the fourth and fifth.
However,
Josh Erpenbeck was the answer that Rose-Hulman needed as he pitched 3.1 innings of one-hit baseball to hold Bridgewater scoreless.
Jonathan Oliger would come in to get the final two outs of the game in the ninth to record the save.
Zacheus Carr earned the win after entering the game in relief in the third inning.
In game 2, the Fightin' Engineers would again get out to a great start with a six-run second inning on a pair of home run balls.
Dalton Busboom got it started with an RBI single. Then,
Kade Kline hit a three-run homer, and, just two batters later,
Colter Couillard-Rodak hit his second home-run of the year to put Rose-Hulman up 6-1.
However, Ferrum would fight back with two in the third and four in the fourth to retake the lead 7-6.
Rose-Hulman would then answer with four runs of their own to retake control of the game. Busboom, Kline, and
Peter Rogers all recorded RBI singles in the fifth.
The Fightin' Engineers would tack on three more runs to close out the game on an RBI triple by Busboom and a solo home run by
Mark Serdinak.
Ferrum would rally in the bottom of the ninth with five runs, but with two on and two out,
Schuyler Wilcox got the Panthers batter to ground out to end the game.
Kline led the team with 5 hits and 5 RBIs in the two games.
Andy Krajecki added four hits, and Rogers and Busboom each added 3 hits.
Michael Yager added the win in game 2.
Rose-Hulman improves to 3-3 on the season, while Bridgewater drops to 3-7 and Ferrum drops to 2-7. The Fightin' Engineers will return to Art Nehf Field in Terre Haute for their home opener as they host Alma for a three-game series on March 11 and 12.
