Softball Falls in Two 1-Run Heartbreakers at Hanover

HANOVER, Ind. -- The Hanover Panthers overcame strong offensive performance by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to pick up last at-bat wins 8-7 and 12-11 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball action on Tuesday.

In the opener, Rose-Hulman rallied from a 5-2 deficit with three runs in the 7th inning to force extra innings.  After both teams scored once in the eighth, Hanover scored twice in the ninth to pick up the 8-7 win.

Nicole Lang and Phoebe Worstell led the game one offense with two hits each.  Lang had two singles with two runs scored, two walks and one RBI.  Worstell contributed two singles, two RBIs and one run scored.

MaKenzie Morgan scored twice in the opener, and Jadyn Winkler had a single, run and an RBI.  Worstell provided the key hit in the 7th inning comeback with a 2-run double and also struck out six in the pitching circle.

In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman scored eight times in the second inning and three times in the third, but Hanover scored five runs in the first and four in the third to close within 11-9.  The Panthers completed the dramatic comeback win with three runs in the final inning on a walkoff single from Dani Steward.

Worstell and Winkler each blasted home runs as part of Rose-Hulman's 14-hit game two attack.  Winkler compiled a 2-for-4 day with a home run, triple, two runs scored and two RBIs, and Worstell was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Other multi-hit games included Lang with two doubles, one run and one RBI; Kennedy Michniewicz with two singles, one run and one RBI; and Lexi Fortuna with two singles and two runs scored.  Katelyn Sarvis added a double, one run and one RBI, and Morgan scored once with two RBIs.

Ashley Pinkham and Morgan Joyce contributed one hit and one run to the effort, and Pinkham struck out three in the pitching circle.

Hanover improved to 13-17 and 5-3 in conference play, while Rose-Hulman stands 6-14 overall.  The Fightin' Engineers return home to face Webster in non-conference action on Friday at 4 pm.
