TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's volleyball team opened their 2023 Rose-Hulman Invitational with a pair of wins on Friday evening. The Fightin' Engineers won in come-from-behind fashion in the opener against Asbury for a five-set victory. Then, they cruised past Grove City in the second match of the day for a sweep.
Rose-Hulman came out of the gates slow against Asbury as they dropped the first set 25-22 with 8 hitting errors. However, they would turn things around in the rest of the match as they made just 10 errors for the rest of the game.
The Fightin' Engineers won the second set 25-15, but the Eagles came back to take a 2-1 lead with a 25-23 win in the third set. The two teams combined to have 33 kills with just 3 errors as the Eagles hit 0.436 to win the set.
However, Rose-Hulman battled back once again with a 25-12 win in the fourth set thanks to a 0.393 hitting percentage. In the fifth, Asbury took a 4-1 lead early, but the Fightin' Engineers would win 9 of the next 10 points and cruise to a 15-7 set win to win the five-setter.
Jillian Gregg led the team with 14 kills and 27 assists.
Allie Fults,
Sophia Koop, and
Kate Wood all added 12 kills.
Lily Ebright paced the team with 30 digs, and
Syndey Naibauer dominated at the net with a career-high of 5 blocks.
The 60 kills for the team is the most since their 4-set win over Earlham on October 26, 2022. The 0.259 hitting percentage is also their second highest of the season.
In the second match, Rose-Hulman came out of the gates slow once again as they trailed 16-10, but they were able to fight back to win 14 of the next 15 points and cruise to a 25-18 win of the set.
From there, it was all Fightin' Engineers as the team would win the next two sets 25-21 and 25-22 with hitting percentages over .200 in all three sets.
Wood led the team with 14 kills, and
Megan Korte added 12.
Ebright finished just shy of her second straight 30-dig match as she finished with 29.
The Fightin' Engineers will return to their home floor tomorrow for a pair of games as they battle Baldwin Wallace at 11 AM and Olivet at 3 PM.
