TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team dropped their home opener to Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. The Fightin' Engineers fell 3-1 in a tightly-fought contest.
Rose-Hulman had the first real chance to get on the board in the 10th minute as a cross from
Caleb Urban to
Owen Trudt just missed its target which would have led to a point blank opportunity.
The Bears came back down the field and got on the board on a goal from Carter Sasser. Then, WashU would double their lead just eight minutes later as a cross from Landon Green hit just in front of the keeper and bounced right through traffic into the back of the net.
In the second half, Wash U wasted no time adding to their lead, scoring in the 50th minute from John Daniels off a great pass from Joseph Hipskind.
Rose-Hulman would grab one back halfway through the half in the 65th minute after the Bears were called for a foul in the box off a free kick. Urban would step up and bury his second goal of the season to cut the lead to two.
However, the lead was too much to overcome and Wash U held on to a 3-1 victory.
Wash U tallied 8 shots to Rose-Hulman's 6.
John Biederstedt added three saves in the loss.
Urban and
Tyler Eldridge led the team with 2 shots each.
Rose-Hulman will return to their home pitch on Wednesday night as they host in-state rival Wabash for a 7 PM kickoff.
