TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team brought home their fifth win in the last seven games with a 73-57 victory over Manchester on Wednesday night. With the win, Rose-Hulman improved to 8-8 overall and into a tie for fourth place at 5-4 in the HCAC.
Manchester came out hot to start this one leading 8-2 early and holding a lead for over six minutes in the first quarter. However, Rose-Hulman was able to score on their final three possessions of the period to take a 17-15 lead into the quarter break.
The back-and-forth game continued into the second quarter with each team trading buckets and the lead never growing larger than 3 points until the Fightin' Engineers went on an 8-0 run capped by a pair of threes from senior
Ashley Black to put them in front 34-28 at the break.
The Fightin' Engineers stretched their lead to 11 in the third quarter, but the Spartans were able to scratch and claw their way back into the game. However, Black did it again at the end of the third quarter hitting a 25-footer at the buzzer to extend the lead to 9 and slash the Manchester hopes of a road victory.
That three would be the start of a 13-2 run to help Rose-Hulman extend their lead to 17, and they came away with a big 73-57 win on their home floor.
Black led the way with 21 points and added 3 assists.
Jamie Baum,
Manuella Shomba, and
Grace Roland all finished in double figures with 11 points.
Guard rebounding was a key for Rose-Hulman as both
Sophia Reese and
Emilia Diaz recorded career-highs in rebounds. Reese finished with 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Diaz tallied 4 points and 5 rebounds in the win.
Columba Rodriguez also added her second-highest scoring output of the season with 4 points.
Rose-Hulman will return to their home floor on Saturday, January 20 at 1 PM as the Fightin' Engineers host Bluffton for Greek Night.
