BLUFFTON, Ohio -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology football team picked up their biggest win of the season with a 52-10 victory over Bluffton on Saturday afternoon.
Jay Smith was the star of the show for the Fightin' Engineers as he broke the single-game rushing record in school history with 252 yards, breaking Kyle Kovach's record of 246 yards from 2011. His rushing yard total is also the fourth-most of any player in NCAA Division III this season. Smith also found the endzone five times on the ground, tying the single-game school record and the highest single-game total of any players in NCAA Division III this season.
Daniel Huery opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 33-yard touchdown catch from
Rick Easterwood. Then, on the ensuing drive,
Marshall Koch took an interception back for a touchdown from 28-yards out for the first defensive touchdown of the season to extend the lead to 14-0.
After a Bluffton field goal, Rose-Hulman turned the game into the
Jay Smith show as he scored the final five touchdowns. He ran in three scores to end the first half from 7, 8, and 3 yards out to help the Fightin' Engineers extend their lead to 42-3 heading into the break. He added another touchdown from 17 yards out and the final one from 3 yards out to finish off the 52-10 victory.
Easterwood threw for 121 yards and a score trough the air as the team relied mostly on the ground game. Huery added 8 catches for 92 yards and a score.
Koch led the team with 7 tackles, a sack, and an interception.
Jaxon Naviaux also added an interception for the Fightin' Engineers, and
Gabe Adams added the lone other tackle for loss.
Adam Field and
Austin Hastings also added a team-high 7 tackles.
With the win, the Fightin' Engineers improve to 3-4 on the season and 2-1 in the HCAC. The Fightin' Engineers will return to their home field on Saturday, November 2 as they host the Manchester Spartans at 1:30 PM on Senior Day.
