HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's basketball team brought home a 74-65 win over Olivet on Saturday in the final game of the Glenn Van Wieren Classic at Hope College.
After a back and forth start to the contest, the Fightin' Engineers would take the lead 13-12 on a
Daniel Savovic triple, and they would not relinquish the lead again.
Back to back triples by Savovic and
Joey Schmitz would help Rose-Hulman stretch their lead to 12, and they would take a 42-32 lead into the locker room. The Fightin' Engineers shot 56% from the field and 57% from three with Schmitz leading the way with 17 points and 5 triples in the first half.
Early in the second half, Rose-Hulman capped off their 14-3 run to take the largest lead of the game at 15 on a banked in three ball by
Simon Blair.
Olivet continued to chip away at the lead, cutting it to five with just 6:29 remaining, but they couldn't get any closer as the Fightin' Engineers brought home the 74-65 win.
Joey Schmitz would tie his career-high in points with 22 on 8-16 shooting, including knocking down 6 of 12 long balls.
Daniel Savovic was a perfect 3-3 on threes as he added 11 points in the win.
Jack Jenniges and
Kobe Stoudemire also finished in double figures with 11 and 10.
With the win, Rose-Hulman improves to 7-4 on the season and finishes the Gleen Van Wieren Classic with a 1-1 record. The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Saturday, January 4, as they travel to Berea to take on the Mountaineers in HCAC play.
