BEREA, Ky. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's basketball team went on the road and brought back a 75-73 buzzer-beater victory over the Berea Mountaineers in the first meeting between the two schools since 1970.
The Mountaineers controlled the early part of the game not taking their first lead until under seven minutes remaining in the half. With Berea leading 25-22, Rose-Hulman hit back to back triples from
Joey Schmitz and
Daniel Savovic to spark the offense and a 20-4 run over the next 7:06 to help the Fightin' Engineers take control with a 42-29 lead. After a pair of Berea buckets, Rose-Hulman would take a 42-33 lead into the locker room.
Rose-Hulman would hold the lead for the majority of the second half until the Mountaineers went on an 8-2 run to take their first lead of the second half at 63-62. Schmitz and Savovic would hit back-to-back triples again to try to take back the advantage for the Fightin' Engineers, but Berea would not go away and would retake the lead at 69-68 with 1:19 remaining in the contest.
After a pair of free throws from
Miles McGowen, the Mountaineers once again hit a tough shot to retake the lead, but the Fightin' Engineers had another answer on the offensive end with a three by
Jack Jenninges to take a 73-71 lead with just 22.6 seconds remaining. On Berea's final possession, the Mountaineers got an offensive rebound and putback to tie the game with just 8.8 seconds to go. Schmitz took a deep three, and
Miles McGowen was there on the offensive glass to tip home the game-winner for the second buzzer-beater victory of the season for Rose-Hulman.
Joey Schmitz was the main catalyst of the Rose-Hulman offense as he made eight threes in the game, the second most in a game in Rose-Hulman history and the most since Zach Johnson back eight in 1996. He would finish with a career-high 28 points and 5 rebounds to will Rose-Hulman to a victory.
Miles McGowen added 14 points and 13 rebounds for his 25th career double-double and 5th double-double of the season.
Daniel Savovic also added 11 points and a team-high 5 assists.
Cole Pride and
Jack Jenniges also finished in double figures with 11 points as the Fightin' Engineers had five players in double figures in the win.
With the win, Rose-Hulman improves to 8-4 overall and 5-0 in the HCAC. The Fightin' Engineers will look to remain unbeaten in conference play on Wednesday, January 8 as the host the Mount St. Joseph Lions in the just their second home game in the last nine times on the court.
