MELBOURNE, Fla.-- The Rose-Hulman softball team continued their spring trip to Florida with a doubleheader on Tuesday. The team earned a shutout win against Houghton with a final score of 11-0 after five innings, and suffered a loss to Eastern with a final score of 6-2. This puts the Fightin' Engineers at 2-2 overall this season.
In the first game, Rose-Hulman was able to get things going early. The team jumped to a 4-0 lead after three innings.
Gabriella Ezzell extended the lead with her first home run of her Rose-Hulman career in the top of the fourth. A double by
Aubrey Smith brought in a run by
Katie Palmer to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Rose-Hulman continued to hit the ball well extending their lead to 11-0 to end the game after five innings.
Phoebe Worstell earned the shutout win pitching all 5.0 innings totaling six strikeouts.
Jessica Newsom was the standout at the plate with two doubles and a triple with three runs scored and two RBIs.
In the second game of the day, Eastern was able to score three runs to start the game and take the early lead. An error by the Eagles brought in a run by
Katelyn Sarvis, and a sacrifice fly brought in a run by
Kayla Schnippel to cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Eastern finished the game strong scoring three more runs to put the game out of reach for the Engineers. Schnippel would suffer the loss in the circle after pitching only one inning.
The Fightin' Engineers will continue their spring trip facing Grove City and Eastern on Wednesday, February 28 at 2:30 PM and 4:45 PM.
